Beslis een van die interessantste tradisies in die bruilof geskiedenis! In ouer dae het mense geglo dat die wêreld wemel van donker geeste wat alles in hulle vermoë sou doen om die troudag te bederf of onmin in die huwelik te saai. Die bruid se vriendinne sou dan aantrek soos sy aantrek om die geeste te verwar sodat hulle nie weet watter meisie om te ontvoer nie. Dit was ook die strooimeisies se plig om die bruid fisies teen skoorsoekenede mans te beskerm wat met haar wil trou of in die verderf wil lei.

In antieke tye, as die man op ‘n trouvrou besluit het, het die vrou en haar familie selde ‘n sê in die saak gehad nie. In baie situasies sou die bruidegom haar ontvoer, met haar toestemming of soms teen haar sin en op geweldadige wyse. Wat ons vandag as die strooijonkers ken, was destyds die bruidegom se regterhande wat saam gegaan het om die bruid se familie te stuit en enigeen wat in die pad van die bruidgom sou staan van kant te maak.
